Multidimensional Deconstruction and Contemporary Resonance of Macao’sCulture ——Threefold Interpretations Centered on Wu Zhiliang’s Why Macao

Abstract: Through long-term historical accumulation and the dynamics of the times, Macao’s unique culture has become an important model for the integration of Chinese and Western civilizations. Why Macao? written by Wu Zhiliang systematically sorts out Macao’s profound cultural connotations in seven parts, including “Cultural Macao” and “Literary Macao”, and profoundly responds to the core proposition of “Why Macao?” raised by the author. This substantial work not only offers Chinese readers an important text for understanding Macao, but also provides a vital reference for numerous researchers devoted to the study of Macao’s politics, economy and culture. Centering on this book, this paper attempts to echo the “Macao Narrative” put forward by Wu Zhiliang from three dimensions:historical foundation, cultural characteristics and contemporary value. It further deconstructs and explores the inheritance paths of Macao’s culture against the backdrop of the new era. Finally, it discusses the developmental implications of the “Macao Experience”, and proposes new ideas and perspectives for Macao’s development.
