Establishing Macau Studies: From Cultural Self-Awareness to TheoreticalConstruction——On the CulturalInterpretation and Academic Value of Why Macau

Abstract: Why Macau explores Macau’s multifaceted positioning within historical experience, cultural exchange, and regional development through a broad academic lens. Macao’s geographical advantages and historical context have forged a unique cultural space where Eastern and Western civilizations converge. Consequently, building “Cultural Macao” represents a highly promising future developmental strategy for the region. Literature significantly contributes to a region’s cultural ecosystem; Macao’s literary creation is crucial for shaping and expanding its cultural landscape. The convergence of diverse literary forces will help foster a shared cultural identity for Macao. The emergence of Macau Studies represents a significant manifestation of Macau’s academic discourse constructing its own subjectivity. Macau culture and Macau Studies mutually empower each other.That is, Macau culture provides the research foundation for Macau Studies, while Macau Studies theoretically elevates Macau culture in return. Through theoretical refinement and value dissemination, Macau culture is elevated from a local resource to a global experience, and thus ultimately, driving its flourishing development.
