Shen Diemin's Yijing Textual Criticism Research during
the Republican China Period

Abstract: As a scholar and revolutionary spanning the late Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China, and the People'sRepublic of China, Shen Diemin has made fruitful and uniquely valuable achievements in the study of the Book ofChanges. In terms of the textual research on the Meng's School and Fei's School of the Zhouyi, Shen Diemin hassorted out the academic veins of these two major schools through the compilation of lost writings and the textualresearch on their lineages. For example, he has examined and verified various different interpretations of the Yao Ci,and demonstrated that Madam Cao studied the Yi of the Fei's School, thus bringing the Yi-ology thoughts of the HanDynasty back to light. In the textual research on the Image-Numerology Yi-ology, Shen Diemin has corrected themisinterpretations of the generating numbers of the Nine Palaces, explained the principles of the changes between theInnate and the Acquired, revealed the origin of the formation of the Eight Winds, maintained the historical integrityof the Variable Images and Mutual Bodies, and corrected Zhu Xis mistakes in the Transformation of Hexagrams,showing his profound academic attainments. His scholarship is based on traditional textual research, integratesknowledge from multiple disciplines, inherits the rigorous and realistic spirit of the Qianlong-Jiaqing School ofEvidential Learing, and provides an important methodological paradigm for the modern study of the Book of Changes.
