A Study on Musicologist Dai Dingcheng's Early Music Creation

Cui Yiqian

Abstract:Musicologist Dai Dingcheng had been studying in Japan and delivering lectures in Europe and America since the early 1990s. After being invited to work in Macao in 2003, he has kept doing research, and has achieved a lot in his study of early European polyphonic music and Macao urban music. At present, the academic circles pay a lot of attention to Dai Dingcheng's music achievement, with great comments and approval. In the early 1980s, Dai Dingcheng composed many pieces of music, which were widely accepted. But this did not arouse enough attention of the public. Take the female three-part chorus "Spring Rain" as an example, this article analyzes the exuberant details in his multi-part writing----the melody, harmony, and tonality. Finally, this paper draws a conclusion that Dai Dingcheng's early music achievements are not only the accumulation of his experience and learning when he was young, but also a source of “living water”for his success in musicology. From this, we could get an insight into the reasons for his subsequent academic accomplishment.
