Abstract: Art therapy, as an important means of non-verbal psychological intervention, hasdemonstrated irreplaceable advantages in assisting the elderly in emotional expression andpsychological adjustment. This study, supported by the theory of art therapy, systematicallyexplores the psychological motivations, characteristic patterns of color application in thepainting creation of the elderly group, as well as its intrinsic connection with emotional release. The research first sorts out the core concepts of color theory and emotional expression in the field of art therapy, and then through theoretical analysis and logical deduction, explains thepsychological symbolic meaning and emotional projection mechanism behind the color choicesof the elderly. The results show that the colors in the paintings of the elderly present commoncharacteristics such as low lightness and strong saturation contrast.Their color language is notmerely an aesthetic choice, but rather an intuitive externalization of their inner emotional state, review of their life journey and the process of self-integration. Painting creation has establisheda safe and non-judgmental channel for emotional release, which can effectively alleviatethe loneliness and anxiety of the elderly, and promote the deepening of their self-awarenessand the reconstruction of their life meaning. This study aims to provide theoretical basis andmethodological guidance for the practice of art therapy for the elderly, emphasizing the use ofcolor as a medium to pay attention to and enhance the spiritual well-being level of the elderly.
