Disciplinary Foundations and Development Tends of Musical Performance Studies
YANG Jian
Abstract: Musical Performance Studies is an interdisciplinary field that has expanded rapidly alongside recording technology, digital media, and artificial intelligence. This article outlines its three disciplinary foundations: historically informed performance and its reshaping of stylistic concepts;analysis-and-performance research linking score and sound; and empirical psychological research on expressivity, practice, and performance anxiety. It then reviews its development in China, itsmethodological differences from international scholarship, and the global shift from humanistic interpretation towards empirical methods, visualization, and practical application. Chinese Musical Performance Studies could draw on international theories and methods while building on its ownperformance traditions, educational systems, and digital resources, forming a more independent and practice-grounded scholarly path.
