A Study of Commercial Theater Venues in Urban Areas of Jiangxi Province during the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China

Abstract: During the periods of the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, commercial drama performances were prevalent in major cities of Jiangxi Province, and there were numerous venues available for these performances. Compared with other cities, the commercial performance venues in Jiangxi exhibited the following characteristics: uneven development in different regions,diversified types, inadequate housing, and fierce competition among the venues. By sorting out the development and changes of the commercial drama venues in major cities of Jiangxi province, this study provides a new sample for the research on urban commercial drama performances of those periods. This study also reveals the real nature of urban commercial drama performance of those periods in a more objective and comprehensive way.
