Research on the Construction Mechanism of National Identity amongMacao Youth: An Analysis Based on the Mediating Effect Theory ofPatriotism Education

Abstract: In the post-reunification era, the Macao Special Administrative Region goverment has madecontinuous efforts to enhance the national identity of young people. On the 25th anniversary of Macao's return,the national identity of Macao youth reached a historical high. Recent studies have mainly focused on theanalysis of factors influencing the changes in national identity among young people in Hong Kong and Macao,which has promoted research on building a stable and positive national identity in a diverse society. However,few studies have concentrated on the factors influencing identity through policies and the mechanism of suchinfluence. Based on the theory of national identity, this study focuses on the mechanism of the impact ofpolicies on identity, By analyzing the data on the changes in the identity of Macao youth and theimplementation of the Macao SAR govemment's patriotism education policies, a triple mediating mechanismmodel of cognitive, emotional, and bchavioral paths is proposed. Based on the findings of this study, it provides inspiration for the formulation of patriotism education methods by the goverment and educators.
